A period of exploration

4 10 2011

The first data set from the Dambwa release site has been analyzed using geographic information systems.  This map gives us an indication of where the Dambwa pride have been spending their time since their release.  As we expected they have ranged widely as they explore their home; with waterholes two and three being clear favourite spots to hang out.  The northern half of the site has shorter grass due to a fire before the pride’s release that burnt out the longer stuff that dominated.  We can see that the pride is favouring these shorter grass areas at the moment; as are the various game species, which may in fact be the greater reason for this observed pattern in pride movements.

As more initial data is analyzed we will give you the results so that you can share in our growing understanding of life in a pioneering lion pride.
